Will ally with AIMIM after launching my party on Dec 22: Suspended Trinamool leader Humayun Kabir
In Kolkata earlier this week, suspended Trinamool Congress member Humayun Kabir revealed plans to set up a new party on December 22 and line it up with All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIM I). He also called on the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Indian National Congress and Naushad Siddiqui’s Indian Secular Front (ISF) to join him in a coalition aimed at challenging both the ruling Trinamool Congress locally and the Bharatiya Janata Party at the center.
“I will announce the name of my new party on December 22. My party will ally with Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), and I have already discussed the issue with Owaisi saheb. He has asked me to come to Hyderabad for further talks,” he said. The comments came the day after he unveiled a Babri Masjid foundation stone in Beldanga, Murshidabad district.
“Alliance with the AIMIM is confirmed. I also welcome CPIM and ISF, and Congress also so that we can fight together against the BJP at the Centre and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. Our target is 135 seats in West Bengal. Once the alliance is formalised, we can hold seat‑sharing talks,” Kabir added.
During the 2021 state assembly elections, the CPIM‑led Left Front and Congress had teamed up with the newly formed ISF, but the partnership failed to win any seats for the Left or Congress, while ISF secured only a single seat in the 294‑member West Bengal Assembly. With Kabir’s party still unlaunched and the Left and Congress planning to break their partnership and contest on their own, it remains uncertain how receptive the other parties will be to his overtures. Reports suggest that the CPIM has already ruled out any alliance with his outfit, accusing him of being a BJP agent.
