Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a close look at the ongoing work on the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat, during his visit on Saturday. Once finished, this ambitious project will become the world’s largest maritime museum, shining a spotlight on India’s ancient maritime traditions while boosting tourism, research, education, and skill development.
The NMHC, costing around Rs 4,500 crore, aims to honor the country’s rich seafaring history and turn the site into a vibrant hub for visitors and learners. Modi shared his excitement in a post on X, highlighting how it will showcase these traditions and drive growth in the area.
Earlier that day, Modi chaired a key meeting in Gujarat to check the NMHC’s progress. He then headlined the Samudra se Samriddhi event in Bhavnagar, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for development projects totaling more than Rs 34,200 crore.
Focusing on the maritime sector, Modi kicked off initiatives worth over Rs 7,870 crore. These include the sleek Mumbai International Cruise Terminal at Indira Dock, a new container terminal with modern facilities at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, expanded cargo handling and berths at Paradip Port, the Tuna Tekra Multi-Cargo Terminal, upgraded firefighting and road links at Kamarajar Port in Ennore, coastal defenses like sea-walls in Chennai Port, a sea-wall on Car Nicobar Island, a multi-purpose cargo berth plus a Green Bio-Methanol Plant at Deendayal Port in Kandla, and ship repair setups in Patna and Varanasi.
Modi also pushed forward sustainable growth by launching projects worth over Rs 26,354 crore in partnership between the central and Gujarat governments. These span energy, renewables, and infrastructure. Highlights include the HPLNG Regasification Terminal at Chhara Port, the Acrylics & Oxo Alcohol Project at Gujarat IOCL Refinery, a 600 MW Green Shoe Initiative for eco-friendly power, the PM-KUSUM program’s 475 MW solar feeder to help farmers, the 45 MW Badeli Solar PV Project, and full solar power for Dhordo village.
On top of that, he laid foundations for more LNG infrastructure, additional renewable energy efforts, coastal protection measures, new highways, and healthcare upgrades. These cover expansions at Sir T. General Hospital in Bhavnagar and Guru Govind Singh Government Hospital in Jamnagar, plus four-laning 70 km of national highways.
These moves underscore Modi’s drive for balanced, green development across India’s maritime and energy landscapes, promising jobs and progress for communities in Gujarat and beyond.
