Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Promises Quick Flood Compensation to Farmers and Victims
In a big relief for flood-hit people in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Friday that his government will hand out compensation to all victims within just 45 days. Speaking at a high-level meeting in Chandigarh, Mann shared a clear plan to help farmers, homeowners, and livestock owners recover fast from the recent devastating floods.
Mann highlighted that his team will offer the highest crop damage compensation in the country – a whopping Rs 20,000 per acre. "This is the highest ever in Punjab’s history," he said. Under past governments, farmers often waited years and chased officials for payments after losing their crops. But now, things are changing. The special crop damage assessment, called "girdawari," kicks off from September 13 and wraps up in 45 days. Officers from non-flood areas will head straight to affected villages to inspect fields quickly, no matter the crop type – if there’s damage, compensation follows.
Once reports are ready, farmers get a full week to check and fix any mistakes. Cheques will then go directly into their hands. In villages where entire crops got wiped out, the process speeds up to just one month, so help arrives even sooner.
It’s not just farmers – the Punjab government is stepping up for everyone hit by the floods. Damaged houses will get compensation too: Rs 1,20,000 for completely collapsed homes and Rs 40,000 for partial damage. That’s a huge jump from the old Rs 6,800 for partial fixes under previous regimes.
Livestock owners won’t be left out either. Lose a cow or buffalo? You’ll get Rs 37,500. A goat? Rs 4,000. The same goes for bulls, horses, poultry, fish farms, and more, all as per set rules. These payouts for houses and animals start from September 15 and aim to finish within 45 days.
Tragically, the floods claimed 55 lives – the worst in four decades. Mann noted that cheques have already reached 42 families. He checked in with Deputy Commissioners via video on the ground situation and pushed for medical camps in every village, plus fogging to fight diseases. The CM also plans to urge the central government to ease norms for house damage claims.
With this swift action, Punjab’s flood victims can look forward to real support without the usual delays. The government’s focus on quick assessments and fair payouts shows a commitment to rebuilding lives in flood-affected areas.
