“Will govt pressure Taliban to respect women’s rights?”: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi

Mumbai, India – A member of Parliament, Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena (UBT), said on Friday that India must keep a close eye on Afghanistan and push the Taliban to uphold women’s rights. She urged New Delhi to put pressure on the Taliban government and to keep the country’s foreign‑policy moves under constant review.

India is watchful over Afghan ties

Chaturvedi told a press conference that India will not accept problems that come from the link between Pakistan and Afghanistan. She urged the government to “continuously evaluate” its foreign policy, especially as the Taliban, who seized power in 2021, run the country. The MP highlighted that the Taliban have historically barred women from certain jobs and education—a stance that conflicts with India’s democratic values.

Afghan foreign minister visits New Delhi

On Thursday, Afghanistan’s acting foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, arrived in New Delhi for a week‑long visit (October 9‑16). It was the first high‑level delegation from Kabul to New Delhi since the Taliban took over. Muttaqi’s team will meet his Indian counterpart, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, and senior officials to discuss broad issues, including strengthening ties between the two countries.

India does not formally recognise the Taliban, but it continues to engage diplomatically and offer humanitarian aid, especially after a recent earthquake in the region. An Indian MEA spokesperson confirmed that India has maintained contacts with the interim government, providing medical assistance and discussing trade links.

Diplomatic gestures

During the week, Jaishankar handed over five ambulances to Muttaqi, part of a larger gift of 20 ambulances and other medical equipment. The gesture highlights India’s long‑standing support for Afghan people. Jaishankar also announced that India will upgrade its mission in Kabul to a full embassy, a move that was paused after the Taliban seized power in 2021.

Key takeaways

  • Priyanka Chaturvedi calls for stronger pressure on the Taliban to protect women’s rights.
  • Afghanistan’s foreign minister’s visit marks a cautious but meaningful step in India‑Afghanistan diplomacy.
  • India remains a key humanitarian partner for Afghanistan despite not recognising the Taliban.
  • New Delhi is set to re‑establish its embassy in Kabul and send medical equipment to support Afghan health services.

These developments underline the complex balance India faces: it must protect its values and people while maintaining a practical diplomatic relationship in a volatile region.
