‘Will not shield guilty’, CM Vijayan breaks silence on Sabarimala gold row, slams Oppn

In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan finally spoke out on Wednesday about the Sabarimala gold‑plating controversy, saying the opposition’s protests in the Legislative Assembly were “excessive.” He praised the Speaker for keeping the house calm.

Vijayan said the Assembly had seen many forms of protest, but the moment the Speaker’s face was covered was unprecedented. “I appreciate the Speaker’s work to keep everyone together,” he added. “When the Speaker’s office tried to sort things out, it was clear the opposition was not cooperating.”

The chief minister promised the government would consider any legitimate request from the opposition and would respond to factual concerns. He accused opposition leaders of spreading fear, creating distractions, and stone‑walling the process.

The CM noted that high‑court inspections are already underway, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing the case, and the state will take strict action against those who misbehave. “We do not hide a guilty party, and we will not,” he said.

Vijayan also criticized the way some opposition members disrupted proceedings, even threatening to jump over the bench. He called out actions that targeted staff and women MLAs, stating such behaviour was unacceptable.

The Assembly’s third day of heavy protests forced the Speaker to adjourn temporarily, but the house resumed after a brief pause. The gold‑plating row remains a hot topic in both politics and public debate, with tensions running high between the ruling party and opposition benches.

With the session ending Thursday, the opposition has announced a statewide protest demanding the resignation of Devasom Minister V.N. Vasavan. The Sabarimala gold‑plating controversy continues to dominate headlines in Kerala, and the next few days will likely see more movements and possibly new development of the case.
