Mizoram’s Lengpui Airport halts operations as potholes spotted on runway, 4 flights cancelled

Flights at Mizoram’s only airport ground to a halt Friday after workers spotted at least two potholes on the runway at Lengpui Airport. The issue forced airlines to divert two planes to Agartala and send back one each from Kolkata and Guwahati, leaving passengers frustrated and stranding others.
An airport official explained that safety came first, so they canceled incoming flights from Kolkata, Delhi, and other cities. “We couldn’t risk it,” the official said. Teams jumped into emergency repairs right away, and they expect normal operations to restart once the runway’s fixed.
This isn’t the first time potholes have hit Lengpui’s tabletop runway. The airport, just 30 kilometers north of Aizawl, handles flights to key spots like Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Imphal, and Shillong. Sitting at 1,228 feet above sea level, it stands out as one of India’s few airports built by a state government back in 1998.
Adding to the recent changes, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) stepped in to handle security at Lengpui this past April—the first time the force has set up shop in Mizoram. With 25 years of aviation security know-how, CISF aims to boost safety at this key northeastern hub.
The move fits into India’s push to toughen up security at airports nationwide. CISF teams will team up with local officials to roll out smarter protocols that keep things secure yet hassle-free for travelers. Their goal? Tackle threats like terrorism and smuggling while making sure passengers enjoy a smooth, safe trip through Mizoram flights and beyond.
