Trinamool MLA Humayun Kabir Declares Intent to Build “Babri Masjid” in Murshidabad, Asks for No Opposition
Murshidabad, December 28 – In an interview with IANS, the suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA and former Bharatpur representative, Humayun Kabir, said he would “respond” if anyone tried to stir trouble over his plan to construct a mosque named “Babri Masjid” in the district. He cited the high Muslim population in Murshidabad—about 72 %—as a key reason why such a project should not be met with resistance, contrasting it with Ayodhya’s smaller Muslim demographic.
Key Points from the Interview
-
“Babri Masjid” in Murshidabad?
Kabir reminded listeners that the Supreme Court’s 2020 judgement on the Ayodhya dispute did not prohibit building the mosque anywhere in India. He noted that the court even allocated five acres in another site for the structure, but the low Muslim population there made it impractical. “In Bengal the Muslim population is 37 %, and in Murshidabad it’s 72 %. So if a Babri Masjid is being built here, I don’t understand what the problem is,” he said. -
Fearless Stance
“I neither want to cause trouble for anyone nor do I want to face any trouble myself,” Kabir declared. “I want to say clearly that building a mosque is my right, and so is naming it. Let’s say a boy is born in my house, I will decide what his name will be, right? Similarly, I am building a mosque, and I have decided on its name. I don’t understand why others are having a problem with this.” -
Handling Opposition
When asked whether some groups were trying to mislead the public, Kabir said, “Some people are trying to incite trouble, but this is not something to be incited about. If someone tries to provoke trouble, I will also respond accordingly.” -
Construction Status
He added that a company has taken over the project and is responsible for the mosque’s design, dimensions, and any required government approvals. An engineering team is working in the area and should finish within a month; Kabir aims to start construction before February 15. -
Political Ambitions and Alliances
Kabir’s Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) plans to contest 182 seats in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly election. He also expressed interest in forming alliances with Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Naushad Siddiqui’s Indian Secular Front (ISF). “I am trying to bring them both on board with me. They are all good people… I will take both of them with me and ensure that Muslims in Bengal get the freedom they deserve.” -
Election Forecast
He predicts that if his party, together with Owaisi and Siddiqui, contests elections in Murshidabad, they could win 17 of the 22 seats. He also targets seats in Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, and several parts of North and South Bengal, including Cooch Behar, Mathabhanga, Tufanganj, Howrah, Hooghly, and the Bardhaman and Birbhum districts. -
Openness to Others
“My party’s doors are always open. I will personally welcome everyone,” Kabir said, calling for Muslim voters who have felt deceived by previous administrations—such as the 34‑year Left Front government and Mamata Banerjee’s 14‑year TMC rule—to now have their voice heard.
Background
Kabir has been active in local politics for 43 years. Despite Murshidabad’s large Muslim population, no Trinamool MLA from the area has been appointed a minister to date. His recent surge in popularity has earned him invitations to religious gatherings and television programs across West Bengal. He says he plans to use a helicopter to travel widely in the coming weeks and hold multiple rallies a day to help secure victories for his party’s candidates.
The report is based on the interview conducted by IANS on Sunday, December 28. All statements are Kabir’s own words.
