Bengal: CPI-M asks EC for action against BDOs allowing their offices for Trinamool’s political activities

In West Bengal’s West Burdwan district, two block development officers (BDOs) allegedly let the Trinamool Congress use their offices for a virtual party meeting.
The Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI‑M) has asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to investigate the incident.
Mohammed Salim, a CPI‑M Politburo member and West Bengal secretary, sent a letter to the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). He urged the CEO to examine the claims and, if the BDOs are found guilty, to take legal action. Salim also attached evidence to support his complaint.
The virtual meeting, chaired by Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday, set key organisational tasks for the party. Banerjee outlined duties for party leaders, elected state cabinet members, and local workers in preparation for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters list, scheduled to begin on November 4.
During the meeting, Trinamool Congress told booth‑level agents to follow the booth‑level officers assigned by the ECI during the SIR exercise. The party also announced it would open 6,200 help desks across West Bengal. These desks will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. between November 4 and December 4 to assist voters while the SIR is carried out.
The last SIR in West Bengal was held in 2002, using that year’s voters list as a base. The exercise remains controversial. Trinamool Congress accuses the SIR of being a hidden attempt to implement a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state, claiming it could remove names of illegal immigrants, including Bangladeshis and Rohingya. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) argues that Trinamool’s opposition to the SIR stems from fear of losing illegal names on the voters list.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between political parties and the Election Commission as West Bengal readies its voter list for the upcoming SIR.
