Guwahati, Nov 27 (LatestNewsX) – Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, fired up the assembly Thursday by saying women’s rights in the state will never be put at risk just because the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 has been introduced.
On X platform, CM Sarma posted that his government is determined to guarantee justice, dignity and legal protection for women. He stressed that the draft law shows Assam’s hard‑won promise to uphold the ideals of “Nari Shakti” and to strengthen women’s role across society.
The proposed legislation would ban polygamy statewide, a practice the government argues causes abuse, emotional pain and legal uncertainty for many women. However, it would not apply in areas governed under the constitutional Sixth Schedule, where tribal customs remain protected.
According to the Bill, anyone found to have entered a second marriage while the first is still valid may face up to seven years’ imprisonment. If a person hides an existing marriage and then marries again, the punishment could rise to ten years. Importantly, the law also imposes penalties on anyone who helps or encourages unlawful polygamous unions. Priests, guardians, relatives, or others who knowingly support or solemnise such marriages could be jailed for up to two years.
The Bill also introduces compensation and legal safeguards for women stuck in illegal marriages, offering financial relief and stronger recourse for those previously left without adequate support. Moreover, it tightens penalties for repeat offenders, underscoring the state’s zero‑tolerance stance on violations of women’s rights and dignity.
“This is a clear step toward justice,” Sarma said. “The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 is more than a piece of legislation—it is a social pledge to safeguard the rights and honor of our mothers and sisters.”
