Wounds inflicted by Nehru on the people of Assam yet to heal, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn’t hold back during a huge rally in Assam’s Darrang district on Sunday, firing sharp criticism at the Congress party over its past mistakes. He claimed the pain from Jawaharlal Nehru’s handling of the 1962 Chinese aggression still haunts the people of Assam and the Northeast.

Speaking to a massive crowd, Modi pointed out how Chinese troops marched ahead while the Congress-led government back then left the region to fend for itself. “That betrayal runs deep, and the scars remain fresh in Assam’s memory,” he said. He went on to slam the current Congress mindset, accusing them of siding with infiltrators and anti-national elements instead of backing the Indian Army and the nation’s security.

Modi warned that Congress policies threaten Assam’s security and cultural identity by protecting illegal infiltrators and trying to change the state’s demographics. In contrast, he stressed that the BJP stands firm against such threats. “We won’t let infiltrators take over Assam’s land or erode its rich culture,” he declared.

Highlighting the development gap, Modi mocked Congress’s long rule in Assam. “They governed for decades but managed just three bridges over the mighty Brahmaputra River. In the last 10 years, our government has built six new ones.” This, he said, shows the real difference between Congress’s neglect and BJP’s focus on connectivity and growth in Assam.

Praising the BJP-led double-engine government in the state, Modi celebrated Assam’s booming economy. “India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy, and Assam leads with a whopping 13% growth rate. This turnaround comes from the hard work of our people and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s team,” he added.

Modi also hit back at Congress over the Bharat Ratna award given to beloved Assamese icon Bhupen Hazarika. Recalling the opposition’s backlash, he quipped, “Let them hurl abuses at me—I’m a devotee of Lord Shiva and can handle the poison.” But he made it clear he won’t stay quiet if others, like Hazarika, face insults. Turning to the cheering crowd, Modi asked, “Was honoring Bhupen Da with Bharat Ratna the right call?” The response was a resounding yes, echoing the pride in Assam’s cultural heroes.
