Yamuna floodwaters swamp Delhi, as river flows at 207.48 metres

The Yamuna River in Delhi continues to rise, causing widespread flooding across the city. On Wednesday morning, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge was recorded at 207.48 metres, a slight increase from previous hours. This rising water has flooded many low-lying areas, impacting thousands of residents and disrupting daily life.

Officials reported that the water level stayed steady between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., maintaining at 207.48 metres. In the early hours, it was just slightly below at 207.47 metres, indicating that the river remains high and continues to pose flood risks.

Several important areas in Delhi are now under water. The floodwaters have reached near the Delhi Secretariat—where top officials and ministers work—and areas around Vasudev Ghat are submerged. The flood has also affected popular local markets like Yamuna Bazar, along with neighborhoods such as Geeta Colony, Majnu Ka Tila, Kashmiri Gate, Garhi Mandu, and Mayur Vihar. Many residential and commercial buildings in these areas are underwater, causing hardships for residents and shop owners.

To help those affected, relief efforts are ongoing. Over 14,000 people have already been evacuated from flood-hit zones. Relief camps have been set up at locations like ITO, Mayur Vihar, and Geeta Colony to shelter displaced families. The government has arranged tents for over 8,000 people and opened 13 permanent shelters for about 2,000 residents.

The floodwaters have also reached Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi’s oldest cremation ground, raising concerns that cremation services might be disrupted if the river rises further. Additionally, water has entered Shri Marghat Wale Hanuman Baba Mandir near Kashmere Gate, affecting the local temple and community.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The flood control bulletin predicts that the water level will be around 207.48 metres at the Old Railway Bridge on Thursday morning, but expects the river to start receding soon after. The Old Railway Bridge remains a crucial point for tracking the Yamuna’s flow and assessing flood risks in Delhi.

Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops, and officials work to manage the flooding and ensure the safety of Delhi residents.
