Youth killed after alleged assault in Bihar’s West Champaran; villagers block road in protest

In Patna on December 11th, a 21‑year‑old named Rahul Kumar—resident of Baswaria village in West Champaran’s Nautan police circle—was fatally injured after an alleged attack by a group of men. He went unconscious at the scene and was first taken to GMCH before being transferred to Rahmania Hospital in Motihari, where he eventually died from his wounds.
Word of Rahul’s death quickly reached the local community, prompting hundreds of residents to take to the streets the same evening. They blockaded the main Bettiah‑Nautan road at Baswaria, setting up barricades from bamboo and flame. Traffic stalled for almost two hours until police patrols from Nautan and neighbouring stations arrived and convinced the mob to dismantle the obstruction.
Rahul’s mother, Kamalawati Devi, filed a complaint naming six suspects from Baswaria and Sansarai, namely Ambedkar Patel, Ritik Kumar, Bablu Patel, Golu Yadav, Amit Yadav, and Jhunjhun Kumar, as well as five or six unidentified individuals. An FIR has been lodged, and authorities are actively searching for all accused parties.
According to the statement, Jhunjhun Kumar supposedly lured Rahul out of his house on Thursday, before a group ambushed him near the Bagahi Lohia bridge, striking his motorcycle as soon as he reached the spot. They violently assaulted him on the head with iron rods and motorcycle shock‑absorbers, inflicting severe cranial trauma and other serious injuries. His skull was reportedly heavily crushed.
After the attack, the assailants called Rahul’s family, claiming it was an accident. Early investigations suggest the assault was pre‑planned, and the police are exploring possible motives, prior grudges, and the dynamics between the accused.
A dedicated task force has been set up to apprehend the perpetrators. The incident has cast a heavy shadow over Baswaria and the surrounding region. Rahul’s relatives insist he had been ensnared in a conspiracy that deliberately drew him to the location. Sadar SDPO Vivek Deep noted that the police acted quickly to clear the blockade and restore order. “An FIR has been registered, and a thorough investigation is underway. The case will be solved soon,” he said.
