YSRCP leader Ambati Rambabu booked for ‘threatening’ police officers

In Guntur, police filed a complaint against former minister Ambati Rambabu and other YSR Congress Party members for an unlawful assembly and threatening police officers. The incident occurred after Rambabu led a rally without permission, and police tried to stop the march. When the protestors refused, they allegedly threatened officers and tried to break barricades, causing traffic jams and public inconvenience.

The case is lodged at Pattabipuram Police Station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections that cover assault on public servants (section 126(2)), criminal intimidation (351(3)), and unlawful assembly (189(2)). Police said they had warned Rambabu that the rally was not authorized. Despite the warning, he and his supporters pressed on, sparking a confrontation with the police.

This isn’t the first time Rambabu has faced legal action during YSR Congress protests. The current rally was part of a statewide show of support against the government’s plan to privatise medical colleges. YSRCP cadres staged marches in all 175 constituencies on Wednesday, voicing their opposition to the move.

YSR Congress Party president and former chief minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy posted a statement on X (formerly Twitter). He praised the crowd’s “courage and discipline” and urged that the decision to privatise medical colleges be withdrawn. Reddy highlighted that the protests demonstrate a collective voice that values public education and healthcare over private gain.

The police said they tried every possible measure to prevent the rallies, but the protesters persisted. They viewed the demonstration as a defense of social welfare, showing that the state’s citizens are united in protecting public institutions. The case now adds to Rambabu’s record of legal challenges tied to political demonstrations.
