Kanpur, Nov. 2 – Just one day after a JD‑U candidate was taken into custody for a murder that shook Bihar, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar told reporters that the next Assembly election would be peaceful, transparent and free from violence.
During a press session in Kanpur, Gyanesh Kumar stressed that the Election Commission has “zero tolerance for violence” and urged voters to exercise their right. “Bihar’s elections will be conducted lawfully and transparently,” he said, adding that every voter should feel safe to cast a ballot.
The state will hold its first voting phase on Nov. 6, the second on Nov. 11, and the results will be announced on Nov. 14. The CEC also highlighted the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls—an effort that will clean up 5.1 billion names across 12 states. “Once the SIR finishes, you’ll feel proud of the ECI,” Gyanesh Kumar said.
The CEC’s reassurance came quickly after a night raid on the evening of Oct. 31 that arrested Anant Singh, a JD‑U candidate from Mokama, in connection with the killing of Jan Suraaj worker Dularchand Yadav. Police confirmed that the incident, which occurred near Khushhal Chak, involved a clash between party supporters. Dularchand was a 75‑year‑old village strongman and former RJD leader who was campaigning with JD‑U’s Piyush Priyadarshi. The confrontation escalated into stone‑pelting and hand‑to‑hand fighting, causing Dularchand’s fatal injuries.
Following the death, authorities deployed heavy police forces in the area to curb any further unrest. The arrest of Anant Singh, just weeks before elections begin, sent shockwaves through Bihar’s political circles.
With the upcoming polls, voters and parties alike are watching closely to see if the CEC’s pledge of a peaceful, transparent election will be upheld amid the recent violence. The outcome will set the tone for a democratic “festival” in Bihar.
