Guwahati – The Gauhati High Court, on Thursday, ordered that Aminul Islam, a member of the All India United Democratic Front and sitting legislator, be released immediately. A 2‑judge bench headed by Justices Kalyan Rai Surana and Suresh Majumdar struck down the National Security Act (NSA) detention, meaning Islam can leave the jail once the remaining formalities are finished.
Islam represents Dhing in Assam’s assembly and was first arrested on April 14, this year, under the NSA after making remarks that many deemed inflammatory and “anti-national.” He reportedly linked the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir and the 2019 Pulwama strike to a broader government conspiracy, called for a neutral inquiry, and even mentioned top leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah as part of a supposed cover‑up.
Those comments drew sharp backlash, with critics saying he was stoking communal tensions and undermining national security. The situation intensified when a video surfaced on social media that appeared to show Islam making derogatory remarks and defending those who carried out the Pahalgam assault. Police said the clip was the main reason for invoking the NSA, and Nagaon Superintendent of Police Swapnaneel Deka confirmed the detention order was based on that footage.
In response, AIUDF General Secretary Rafiqul Islam released a statement condemning the alleged remarks, saying the legislator spoke only in a personal capacity and that the comments were “inappropriate,” especially during a time of national mourning.
With the High Court’s ruling, the NSA hold is lifted, ending Islam’s confinement and paving the way for his release subject to the usual legal and administrative procedures.
