New Delhi: Justice J.K. Maheshwari has been named the new Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC), according to a notice issued by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
Sunday’s appointment came from former Chief Justice of India Justice Bhushan R. Gavai, who exercised his authority under Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
“I’m pleased to nominate Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Supreme Court Judge, as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee with effect from November 24, 2025,” read the quotation in the notice published in the Official Gazette by the NALSA Member Secretary.
Justice Maheshwari steps into the position after Justice Vikram Nath was recently chosen as the NALSA Executive Chairman.
The Supreme Court Legal Services Committee is essential for guaranteeing that people who lack financial resources or belong to marginalised social groups can still seek the highest level of judicial relief. By offering free legal aid, representation and support, the SCLSC strives to fulfil the constitutional promise under Article 39A, which requires the State to promote justice on an equal‑opportunity basis and to prevent anyone from being barred from the apex court because of poverty, social or economic disadvantage, or any other impediment.
Through the SCLSC and other mechanisms, NALSA continues to improve the delivery of legal aid and to lower the hurdles that might otherwise stop individuals facing financial or social obstacles from accessing the justice system.
Article 39A states that “the State shall secure that the operation of the legal system promotes justice, on a basis of equal opportunity, and shall, in particular, provide free legal aid, by suitable legislation or schemes or in any other way, to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities.”
