Elizabeth Olsen reveals why she spends her money on skincare, not fashion

Elizabeth Olsen is the newest face of InStyle’s Winter 2025 digital issue, and she’s bringing her signature blend‑of‑minimalism and chic to the cover. The 36‑year‑old actress keeps her style clean and timeless, opting for vintage pieces, a few designer staples, and plenty of practical confidence.

In a sit‑down interview for the magazine, Olsen said she hates pretending to be someone she isn’t. “I don’t know how to be a performative version of myself to the public, nor do I want to,” she told InStyle, adding that her goal is to let people see her as a character when they watch a film.

Her wardrobe stays mostly in the past. “I only wear vintage, like my Cartier watch and Levi’s,” the profile writer noted. “And things my sisters give me from The Row, like her coat.” That isn’t to say Olsen never splurges. When a designer from The Row—twin sisters Ashley and Mary‑Kate—handed her a coat, she made a small exception to her vintage rule. “If your older sisters were the designing duo behind The Row, you’d do it too,” she joked.

The actress told InStyle that she also spends money on skin care and home goods, not designer clothes. “I’ll spend money, but it’s not on clothes. It’s on skin products, it’s on lasers. I invest in elasticity,” she said while scrolling through her Instagram feed.

“Often my dressing list starts with a line like ‘do I need this?’ And if I say no, I keep the item aside,” she added, smiling.

Even when she does buy a new piece, Olsen keeps it practical. She recalled how she wore the same shoes to her interview as her character in a recently wrapped pilot. “They wouldn’t give them to me, so I bought them. They just feel so good on—I love my feet.” That reflects how she chooses designs that are both comfortable and effortlessly stylish.

The cover photos show Olsen in a cool, oversized jacket by Altuzarra, a sentence the magazine calls classic. She moved easily from film sets to red‑carpet events, often favoring slimmer silhouettes over flashy embellishments. A sequinned look from British designer Emilia Wickstead made the front of the magazine— proof that a minimalist can still sparkle.

When asked about her overall taste, Olsen summarized her wardrobe philosophy: “I want people to watch a movie and see me as a character.” She leans into the idea that authenticity is the best style—something that has helped keep her a steady presence in both indie films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her recent rom‑com, for example, showcases a fresh‑but‑natural vibe that pairs perfectly with the dark, blockbuster action of the MCU.

It’s this authenticity that fans love. On social media, Olsen shares photos of her new apartment, local grocery hauls, and the small tables she loves to decorate. She’s keeping her skincare routine in the spotlight, a reminder that a good routine is part of a timeless look.

For an actress who began in indie indie projects and now shines on Hollywood’s biggest stages, Olsen’s style game is a winning combo. Simple, elegant, and always authentic, she proves you don’t need a full designer wardrobe to stand out—just genuine taste and a pop of personality.

The coverage and photos in InStyle’s Winter 2025 digital issue make Elizabeth Olsen’s style accessible to everyone. Fans and fashion lovers alike can take inspiration from her vintage choices, practical spending habits, and the balancing act of maintaining a polished yet down‑to‑earth look.
