Patna: On November 26, the whole country marked Drug De‑Addiction Day, and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar urged people to stay away from drugs and help build a drug‑free society.
In a post that spread across social media, the chief minister highlighted that addiction harms individuals, breaks families apart and weakens the social fabric. He noted that the state is running long‑term campaigns to fight dependence and to support those already affected.
Nitish Kumar pointed out that the province operates rehabilitation centres and various awareness programmes for those struggling with addiction. He made a special plea to the young people to choose a drug‑free life, warning that substance abuse can wreck their education, health, physical growth and mental development.
The CM emphasized the importance of teachers, parents and society in teaching children the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. He said the government has tightened rules to control the sale and use of alcohol and other substances, and that police and officials have been directed to clamp down on smuggling and illicit trade.
“Creating a drug‑free society is not a task for the government alone,” Nitish Kumar said. “Every citizen must stay away from drugs and inspire others to do the same.” He added that such joint effort is key to making Bihar a healthier, more prosperous state.
He noted that Drug De‑Addiction Day is more than an awareness campaign—it reminds each person of their responsibility to help build a safer, addiction‑free community.
Despite Bihar’s comprehensive liquor prohibition, illegal trade and consumption are still being reported. Opposition parties routinely claim that alcohol remains readily available and that vendors are even delivering it to homes.
Estimates suggest a shadow liquor market worth more than ₹20,000 crore operates across the province, and over 300,000 people have been imprisoned for breaking prohibition laws.
