We are like brothers; Shivakumar will become CM when high command decides, says Siddaramaiah after breakfast meeting

In Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar hosted a much‑anticipated breakfast with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday. After spending about a hour and a half together, the two leaders confirmed that they remain in sync, pledging to follow Rahul Gandhi’s and the party’s high command’s decisions on the leadership matter.

Speaking to the press alongside Shivakumar after the meeting, CM Siddaramaiah likened their partnership to that of brothers, saying they would keep working for the party together. When asked when Shivakumar might assume the chief ministership, he replied that it would happen whenever the high command decided it.

I came to Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast. He had visited our residence earlier for breakfast and had invited me then to come to his home for breakfast or dinner. I accepted the invitation, and today I visited his residence and had breakfast with him,” Siddaramaiah recounted.

They also discussed the upcoming Winter Session starting on December 8 and the strategy against a potential BJP no‑confidence motion. Other party leaders, including BJP‑JD(S) figures, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, and Opposition Leader R. Ashoka, had already held talks, and they planned how to conduct the Assembly session.

When pressed about the leadership issue, Siddaramaiah reiterated that they had already talked about it in earlier breakfasts, adding that any decision by the high command or Rahul Gandhi would be respected. “We’re always together, not just during the breakfast a couple of days ago,” he said.

“I’ll meet the high‑command leaders if they call me, and I’ll also see National General Secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal on Wednesday in Mangaluru,” the CM added. “We’re going to attend an event together as guests.” He went on to say that a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting would be called, and they would dine together there, stressing their brotherly bond and joint effort towards the 2028 Assembly elections.

Adding a touch of personal flair, Siddaramaiah shared that at Shivakumar’s house, there were non‑vegetarian dishes, whereas their own home served vegetarian breakfast. He is a non‑vegetarian; Shivakumar is vegetarian. He had requested “good country chicken from the village because the original native breed is not available here.”

Shivakumar described the meeting as a reaffirmation of their unity over government and party affairs. Earlier that morning, the CM savored idli and the famed “natikoli saaru” (a chicken gravy dish) at Shivakumar’s home, accompanied by Shivakumar’s brother and former MP D.K. Suresh, and Congress MLA H.D. Ranganath, a loyal supporter.

On X, Shivakumar posted that he hosted the Hon’ble CM for breakfast, underscoring their shared commitment to good governance and continued development under the Congress vision.

The breakfast took place at Shivakumar’s private residence in Sadashivanagar.
The CM received a warm welcome from Shivakumar and Suresh; the latter and MLA Ranganath respectfully touched the CM’s feet and offered him a bouquet and a shawl, while Shivakumar greeted him and escorted him inside.
Siddaramaiah invited Suresh and Ranganath to join the meal; he served idlis and his favorite “natikoli saaru,” whereas Shivakumar, adhering to his vow, opted for idlis with vegetable sambar.
