In Geneva, Switzerland, lawmakers from the European Parliament, senators, and human rights activists spotlighted serious human rights violations targeting vulnerable women and children in South Asia, with a sharp focus on Pakistan and Bangladesh. The discussion happened during a side event at the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council.
The gathering, put together by International Support for Human Rights and Italia Che Cambia, drew key figures like Anna Maria Cisint, a Member of the European Parliament; Erik Selle, leader of Norway’s Christian Conservative Party; and Fabia Cestelli from Italia Che Cambia. Senators and political activists joined in too.
Erik Selle, who grew up in Bangladesh and holds a special place in his heart for the nation, didn’t hold back on his worries about the country’s slide into chaos over the past year. “I love Bangladesh, but I’m devastated and heartbroken by what’s happened,” he said. Pointing to the new caretaker government under Mohammad Yunus, Selle urged him to step up. “My plea to Yunus is to get control of the country and protect it from extremists,” he added.
Selle pushed hard for global action on women’s rights, drawing from his own work empowering rural women in Bangladesh. “When we strengthen women’s rights and give them chances to earn and support their families, it pulls entire families out of poverty,” he explained. “We have to stop extremism and focus on women’s welfare.” He also flagged attacks on religious minorities like Hindus and Christians in Bangladesh, and raised alarms about women in Pakistan’s Balochistan region facing hardships with little help from the United Nations.
Anna Maria Cisint echoed the urgency, calling the plight of women and young girls in these areas “very difficult.” She turned attention to migrant women from Bangladesh and Pakistan living in Italy, where many endure repression and face pressure to wear the burqa against their will.
The event wrapped up with a strong push for the international community to ramp up pressure on Pakistan and Bangladesh. Activists called for better safeguards for women, children, and minority communities to tackle these ongoing human rights crises in South Asia.
