Karur stampede: TN BJP says Minister Senthil Balaji distorting facts, seeks CBI probe

Tamil Nadu’s BJP is ramping up its criticism of the DMK government after the tragic Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives. The party demands a CBI probe into the incident and slams the ruling DMK for protecting former minister Senthil Balaji amid corruption allegations.

BJP state spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad fired off a tough statement on Thursday, accusing the DMK of undermining democracy by pushing “politics of money and deceit” instead of tackling real problems. He said the party avoids facing the public on key issues.

Prasad targeted Balaji directly, claiming the former minister lacks the moral authority to comment on public matters. He called Balaji’s recent press conference a clear attempt to twist facts and shift focus from the Karur stampede tragedy. “Senthil Balaji’s unchecked anti-people actions and shady deals with money and power won’t hide the truth or bury justice,” Prasad added. He urged the DMK to quit exploiting tragedies and profiting from death.

The BJP presses Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to set aside politics and order a CBI investigation. They want it to expose any “true conspiracy” behind the stampede and bring justice to the victims’ families. Prasad warned that the BJP will keep highlighting the betrayal of Tamil Nadu’s people and fight for legal action against those at fault.

The party also blasts the state government’s fast setup of a one-member commission led by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan. They see it as a way to dodge public outrage. “Why is Senthil Balaji rushing to undermine the commission with false stories?” Prasad asked.

BJP points out holes in Balaji’s own words, saying he basically admitted to widespread corruption at state-run TASMAC liquor outlets. Prasad noted thousands of cases of undercharging and overcharging since 2021. He demanded that Stalin explain these mess-ups to the people of Tamil Nadu.

On top of that, a group of NDA MPs from Tamil Nadu, led by BJP national president J.P. Nadda, plans to send a detailed report to the central government. They’re pushing for a Supreme Court-supervised judicial inquiry into police failures during the Karur stampede.

The Union Home Ministry has already asked the Tamil Nadu government for a report, following Prime Minister’s condolences and quick relief aid to the affected families. Prasad wrapped up by saying Tamil Nadu residents are starting to see the real story behind the Karur tragedy, and the BJP vows to battle on until justice arrives.
