Trump is a 'go' on meeting with China's Xi, Bessent tells CNBC

Trump is ready to meet with China’s President Xi, CNBC’s Alex Bessent reported.

The former president said he has no problem sitting down with Xi — a move that could reshape U.S. trade and diplomatic ties. Bessent told CNBC that Trump is “a go” on a summit, even though Washington has warned that any meeting could be tricky.

“Trump’s interest in talking with Xi shows he’s not looking for trouble,” Bessent said. “He just wants to find a way to move forward on trade and other issues.”

The potential summit comes at a time when the U.S. government is pushing for clearer rules on trade, technology and cross‑border investment. Even though the Biden administration says it wants a firm stance on human rights and AI, Trump’s willingness to meet could open new channels for U.S. business and policy.

If the meeting happens, it would be the first time a U.S. president has met with a sitting Chinese leader since the 1980s. That historic backdrop adds more interest to the track‑ball conversation between the two leaders.

In brief: Trump’s “go” signals a willingness to engage, potentially changing how America talks to China in the coming months.
