Nepal Ambassador calls on Gujarat CM; explores ties in tourism, IT, and energy

Gandhinagar, Dec. 27 – Nepal’s ambassador to India, Shankar Prasad Sharma, visited Gujarat on Saturday and met Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in the state capital. The visit was designed to deepen ties between the two sides, with a particular focus on boosting Nepal’s tourism industry.

During the meeting, the ambassador lauded Gujarat’s rapid development, attributing much of its success to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Gujarat has built world‑class tourism infrastructure that puts it on the global map,” Sharma said, highlighting how the state’s attractions range from iconic landmarks to heritage sites.

The discussion moved beyond tourism. Leaders talked about partnering in information technology, where Gujarat’s robust IT clusters could support Nepal’s digital ambitions, and in hydroelectric power, leveraging Nepal’s rich river resources to meet the state’s industrial energy needs. They also explored opportunities in manufacturing, noting Gujarat’s established role as a production hub, and in education, proposing student exchange programs and institutional collaborations.

Chief Minister Patel spoke of Gujarat’s evolving status under Modi’s governance, pointing out its transformation into a manufacturing powerhouse and its push into emerging fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and global capability centres. He highlighted key tourist destinations – the Statue of Unity, the Great Rann of Kutch, and pilgrimage circuits at Somnath, Dwarka, and Ambaji – which together draw millions of visitors each year.

The delegation was joined by senior officials—including Principal Secretary Sanjeev Kumar and Industries Department Principal Secretary Mamta Verma—underscoring the importance both sides place on these prospects.

Experts suggest that such state‑level engagements could open pathways for investment, technology transfer, and cultural exchange, strengthening ties between Nepal and India. As India and Nepal continue to enhance their bilateral relationship, initiatives like this demonstrate the value of regional diplomacy in fostering shared prosperity.
