Rajasthan is making big moves in the nuclear energy world. After nearly 52 years, the state plans to build its second nuclear power plant in Banswara, building on the success of the Rawatbhata Nuclear Power Plant in Chittorgarh.
Once the Banswara project launches and Rawatbhata expands, Rajasthan’s total nuclear power capacity could hit 6,680 MW. Officials say this positions the state as a key nuclear energy hub in India, supporting the country’s clean energy push.
Rajasthan already tops the charts for renewable energy in India. Now, it’s ramping up nuclear efforts too. Recent uranium discoveries are fueling this growth. The Atomic Minerals Directorate is exploring reserves in Khandela, Sikar district, as well as Udaipur, Dausa, and other Sikar areas. These finds could cut Rajasthan’s reliance on outside nuclear fuel sources.
Let’s look at Rawatbhata, which kicked off in 1963 with help from Canada. Today, seven units run smoothly, generating 1,780 MW. The eighth unit, at 700 MW, is almost ready to go online. Planners are pushing forward with ninth and tenth units, each 700 MW, boosting the plant’s total to 3,880 MW.
Across India, 24 nuclear reactors produce 8,080 MW right now. Rajasthan’s additions will push that to 10,180 MW, and Rawatbhata will become the nation’s largest nuclear facility—bigger than Tamil Nadu’s Kudankulam plant at 2,000 MW.
The Banswara Nuclear Power Project promises even more excitement. It will add 2,800 MW with a whopping Rs 50,000 crore investment. NTPC and NPCIL team up for this joint venture, strengthening Rajasthan’s nuclear infrastructure.
Experts highlight how these projects, like Rawatbhata’s expansion and the new Banswara plant, will boost India’s energy security. They also align with green energy goals, helping the country cut emissions over the next decade. Rajasthan’s nuclear journey looks set to power up the future.
