New Delhi, Oct 26 – South Africa’s cricket legend AB de Villiers said Virat Kohli still has a few strong years of ODI cricket ahead but the 2027 World Cup will likely be the “cherry on the cake” of his career.
De Villiers urged Indian fans to cheer Kohli during the latter part of his journey. Kohli had a shaky start to the series against Australia, getting out in the first two ODIs. He bounced back in the third match, scoring 74 off 81 balls and helping India win by nine wickets. His knock renewed confidence in him for the rest of the tour.
Despite the success, Kohli faced criticism earlier in the series as some questioned whether he could remain a key player by 2027. De Villiers answered those doubts on his YouTube channel, calling the former captain “a game‑changer” who deserves full support.
“Show him the celebration he deserves,” De Villiers said. “Let him find balance and play through the end of his career. He changed cricket forever and deserves a great thank‑you. Maybe he’ll play another five years if he wants.”
The former captain believes the 2027 World Cup will be the final chapter of Kohli’s international career, the ultimate “cherry on the cake.” De Villiers also said Kohli still has up to five years of top‑level cricket left, especially in the Indian Premier League, but a World Cup is a four‑year cycle that demands a lot from a player’s body and mind.
De Villiers added that Kohli will be an important mentor for younger teammates, offering confidence and guidance. “The impact on other players is huge and can’t be measured in runs,” he noted.
Kohli will next appear in India’s three‑match ODI series against South Africa in early November. The series will be watched closely by fans who want to see the veteran bowler and batsman finish his illustrious cricket career on a high note.
