West Indies’ assistant coach Floyd Reifer said his team had a tough first day of the second and final Test against India at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The Indians made the headlines with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unbeaten 173, pushing India to 318 / 2 at stumps. Reifer praised Jaiswal’s batting, calling it “very good” and noting that Jaiswal had “played very nicely.”
On the slow‑moving Kotla pitch, the West Indies bowled cleanly, conceding no extras and keeping a good over rate. However, outside of spinner Jomel Warrican, the bowlers struggled to take wickets. Warrican claimed two wickets, but the wickets came in very different ways – one saw KL Rahul twisted away from the ball, the other snared B Sai Sudharsan back to the crease.
Reifer said the West Indies need to learn to bowl longer spells on this terrain. “When you go to India, you need to create opportunities for your bowlers,” he said in the post‑day press conference. “They have to keep the line and length tight and be consistent.” He added that the pitch seemed flatter today and could turn more heavily later in the match.
India dominated all three sessions on day one, with Jaiswal anchoring the innings and Sudharsan scoring a composed 87. Reifer called Jaiswal’s innings a “good innings” and said the pitch was “pretty good” today.
With the absence of Alzarri and Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales was the team’s fast‑bowling hopeful. Reifer said Seales had “bowled well” in his first Test in India, delivering good lines and lengths. He noted the lack of Alzarri and Shamar was a big loss for the West Indies “in terms of the synergy of the bowling attack,” but he remained optimistic about Seales learning from the experience.
The West Indies will now be looking to use the new ball on day two to overturn the day‑one deficit and challenge India on a pitch that may offer more turn as the Test unfolds.
