Hyderabad sees a busy, yet confusing contest in the Jubilee Hills Assembly by‑election.
The city’s Returning Officer, P. Sairam, said the board accepted 81 nominations out of 211 filed. The remaining 130 hopefuls were turned away, a decision announced on Thursday morning after the scrutiny ran late into Wednesday night.
BRS, Congress and BJP all had their key candidates cleared.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s Maganti Sunitha got the green light. Some family members of the late MLA, Gopinath, claimed she had supplied false details in her affidavit and requested her nomination be rejected. Their allegations, including claims of a “live‑in” relationship and marriage ties, were not enough to stop the BRS ticket.
Congress’s Naveen Yadav and BJP’s Lankala Deepak Reddy also saw their nominations accepted. On the last filing day, 117 candidates had already submitted papers, bringing the total to 211.
Many new candidates entered the race – farmers upset over the Regional Ring Road, residents who say their homes were demolished by HYDRAA, and unemployed youth. They said they were registering protest against the city government and showcasing discontent with local issues.
The final day to drop a name is Friday. Polling is set for November 11, and vote counting will take place on November 14.
In 2023, Gopinath won the seat for BRS by 16,337 votes, beating former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin of Congress. He scored 80,549 votes to Azharuddin’s 64,212, while BJP’s Reddy came in third with 25,866 votes. The All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen, who finished fourth last year, will not field a candidate this time. Their leader, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, has pledged support for the Congress nominee.
