India’s rising cricket star Abhishek Sharma stands on the brink of T20I history as Team India prepares for the thrilling Asia Cup final against Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday. The young opener’s explosive batting has fans buzzing, putting him close to shattering records set by legends like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan.
Abhishek grabbed attention after strong IPL showings over two seasons, where he teamed up with Australia’s Travis Head to fire off blistering starts for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Now, in the Asia Cup, he’s leading the run charts with 309 runs in just six matches. That’s an impressive average of 51.50 and a strike rate of 204.63, featuring three fifties and a top score of 75—all in a row during the Super Four stage.
He’s only 11 runs shy of Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs by an Indian in a multi-nation T20I tournament. And if he piles on 23 more, he’ll top England opener Phil Salt’s mark of 331 runs from a 2023 T20I series against West Indies—the highest ever by a batter from a Test-playing nation in such an event. Salt averaged 82.75 with a strike rate of 185.95, including two centuries and a best of 119.
Abhishek also ties Rohit Sharma (from late 2021 to early 2022) and Rizwan (mid-2021) with seven straight 30-plus scores in T20 cricket. One more could push him ahead of these icons.
This year alone, Abhishek has been a force in T20Is, smashing 588 runs in 11 matches at an average of 53.45 and a strike rate of 211.51. He notched one century and four fifties. Overall in T20Is, he has 844 runs from 23 matches and 22 innings, averaging 38.36 with a strike rate of 197.65, two centuries, five fifties, and a highest of 135.
The Dubai stadium is set to be packed for this epic India-Pakistan Asia Cup title clash, and all eyes will be on Abhishek to see if he makes history under the lights.
