In Ahmedabad, India, West Indies captain Roston Chase called right at the toss and chose to bat first against India in the opening Test of their two-match series. The action kicked off Thursday at the bustling Narendra Modi Stadium, drawing cricket fans worldwide.
This series counts toward the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, marking India’s first Test outing in the new edition. The teams will clash again from October 10 to 14 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Chase explained his decision with confidence: “We’re batting first. The pitch looks solid, but there’s some moisture out there. Test cricket means handling those early hours. We’ve got a young squad ready to play strong cricket. No way we want to bat last on this track—it’ll spin later. We picked two seamers, two spinners, and an allrounder.”
India’s skipper Shubman Gill, who lost the toss, stayed upbeat. “We’ve got four home Tests lined up before year’s end, and we aim to win them all,” he said. “Prep has gone well—everyone’s sharp, and it’s time to switch to that red-ball focus. The surface seems batsman-friendly, but with covers off, early swing could play a role. Not bummed about the toss. Our attack includes two pacers in Bumrah and Siraj, three spinners with Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep, plus allrounder Nitish Reddy.”
