Air rifle mixed teams win gold and bronze at Deaflympics

Indian shooters made a strong showing at the 25th Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo, taking both the gold and bronze medals in the 10‑meter air rifle mixed‑team event.

In the gold‑medal match, India’s Dhanush Srikanth and Mahit Sandhu led from the start, opening a 4‑0 lead and never looking back. They finished the bout 17‑7 over South Korea’s Jeon Dain and Kim Woorim, giving Dhanush his second Deaflympics gold and adding a gold to Mahit’s silver from the individual contest.

The bronze came after a tight battle with Ukraine’s pairing of Violeta Lykova and Oleksandr Kostyk. The teams were tied 4‑4 after the fourth series, and Ukraine surged ahead 7‑5 after the sixth. The Indian duo, Mohammed Murtaza Vania and Komal Milind Waghmare, clawed back, tying the score at 7‑7, 8‑8 and 10‑10. They then claimed two of the next four rounds, ultimately winning 16‑12 for the bronze.

Across three days of competition, Indian shooters earned nine medals total. Tomorrow, the team will line up in the 10‑meter air pistol mixed teams to try to add even more to India’s Deaflympics medal tally.
