Anish Bhanwala, the 23‑year‑old Indian shooter, lifted his first senior individual world championship medal with a silver at the ISSF World Championship in Cairo on November 9.
Bhanwala’s victory came after a dramatic series of shoot‑offs. After qualifying with a perfect 585‑22x score over two days, he entered the final in high form. He survived a double shoot‑off against Germany’s Emanuel Mueller and a second one against Ukraine’s Maksym Horodynets, outshooting each opponent handily in the tie‑breakers. Finally, he faced France’s Clement Bessaguet in the last run. Bessaguet hit a perfect 29‑point series to claim gold, while Bhanwala chipped in three shots of his own, securing the silver.
“It’s hard to explain, but it feels unreal,” Bhanwala said in an excited post‑match interview. “I’ve tried many times before, but this time my training paid off.” He has already booked a spot for the World Cup Final in Doha next month.
While Bhanwala added to India’s shooting glory, other Indian shooters were ready for the next stages. The 10m pistol trio – Suruchi Singh, Manu Bhaker and Esha Singh – is set to compete on Monday. In the mixed‑team event, India’s pairing of Arjun Babuta and Elavenil Valarivan finished eighth with a score of 632.3, missing the medal matches by just 1.6 points. The duo of Rudrankksh Patil and Shreya Agrawal came in 21st overall.
Bhanwala’s silver marks a significant milestone for Indian shooting, expanding the country’s medal count at the ISSF World Championships and setting the stage for further success in upcoming international competitions.
