Matthew McConaughey reveals if he is still interested in becoming the governor of Texas
Matthew McConaughey is keeping the door open on a possible run for Texas governor, but right now, he’s all about his family.
The Hollywood actor shared his thoughts in a recent interview with People magazine. When asked if he’s still eyeing politics—especially the governor’s seat in his home state of Texas—McConaughey didn’t shut it down. “I don’t know,” he said. “Like I said, it’s something I started looking into probably six years ago and something I’ve continued to study. What that arena is, what it would mean, how could I be useful in it, would I be useful in it?”
He admits politics isn’t his natural turf. “It’s not necessarily my language,” McConaughey explained. But he’d jump in if it felt like the right pull. “It would happen when I would look up and see that I’m pulled into it in a way that, ‘Oh, I have to.'”
Back in 2021, McConaughey seriously considered entering the 2022 Texas governor’s race. He even teased the idea publicly, but ultimately stepped back. Now, with the 2026 election just over a year away, the star of Apple TV+’s “The Lost Bus” says any political move might have to wait. His top priority? Raising his three kids.
“For now, I’m very secure with… the original thing I knew I always wanted to be was a dad,” he told People. McConaughey shares 17-year-old son Levi, 15-year-old daughter Vida, and 12-year-old son Livingston with his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey.
He wants to focus on helping them grow into healthy adults first. “So let me do what I can with Camila to get these three kids out of the house as healthy individuals, as much as I can make that possible,” he said. “And then opportunities or choices I can make, I’ll be much more free to make choices.”
McConaughey’s balancing act between Hollywood fame and family life keeps fans wondering what comes next for the Oscar winner.
