Anmol Kharb, the young India shuttler, made headlines at the Arctic Open 2025 in Vantaa, Finland, when she reached the women’s singles semi‑finals and faced Japan’s top seed Akane Yamaguchi. Kharb, who is currently 62nd in the world rankings, fell 21‑10, 21‑13 after a fast‑paced match that lasted a little under 30 minutes.
Last week Kharb stunned Denmark’s Amalie Schulz to lock a spot in the semi‑finals of a BWF Super 500 event. She paced well in the first game, keeping the score close before Yamaguchi, a world No. 4 and three‑time world champion, broke through with a cool, aggressive rally. Yamaguchi quickly pulled away, closing out the opener 21‑10 and then widening the gap to 7‑3 in the second game. Kharb nearly clawed back, tightening the score to 10‑9, but Yamaguchi controlled the play and took the match easily.
The defeat ended India’s challenge in the tournament. Mixed‑doubles specialists Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto were knocked out in the quarter‑finals, while the men’s singles field saw only Tharun Mannepalli advance past the first round. Paris 2024 Olympic semi‑finalist Lakshya Sen exited early, Kidambi Srikanth recorded a walkover, and Ayush Shetty remains the sole Indian woman to win a BWF World Tour title this year after his US Open victory.
Despite the loss, Kharb’s Arctic Open 2025 run proved she can compete at the highest level, and fans will watch her next steps in international badminton with keen interest.
