Abhishek Sharma’s family felt a mix of pride and heartbreak after a unlucky run-out stopped him just short of his first international century in India’s big 41-run victory over Bangladesh. The thrilling Super 4 clash in the Men’s T20 Asia Cup took place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
Abhishek’s sister, Komal Sharma, shared her feelings with right after the match. “We were a little hurt by that run-out—it was so close to a century,” she said. But she’s staying positive: “It’s loading, guys. He’s going to smash a century soon. It’s just part of the game.”
Komal also highlighted Abhishek’s close bond with his mentor, Yuvraj Singh. “He always listens to Yuvraj sir,” she explained. “Yuvraj gives him tips before and after every match, telling him what went right and what didn’t. We follow that guidance.”
The family keeps things in perspective. Abhishek calls his mom his “lucky charm,” and Komal stressed the team’s success above all. “He’s playing great, and the whole squad is on fire,” she said. “Everyone’s rooting for him. But right now, we just want India to bring home the Asia Cup trophy—let’s go, Team India!”
On the field, Abhishek delivered a explosive 75 runs off just 39 balls, powering India to a strong total and clinching their spot in the Asia Cup final. His knock included massive sixes that broke records. He now holds the most T20I innings with five or more sixes by an Indian—six in total, behind only Rohit Sharma (13) and Suryakumar Yadav (9). Plus, Abhishek smashed 17 sixes in this Asia Cup edition, a new tournament record across all formats.
Bangladesh’s stand-in captain Jaker Ali won the toss and put India in to bat. Abhishek and Shubman Gill fired from the start, racing to 72 without losing a wicket in the powerplay. Gill scored 29 off 19 balls before Abhishek kept dominating—until Rishad Hossain’s sharp throw caught him short of his ton. It marked the second straight match where Abhishek missed a century this way.
India’s middle order wobbled after that. Suryakumar Yadav made 5, Tilak Varma also 5, and Shivam Dube just 2. But Hardik Pandya steadied things with 38 off 29, and Axar Patel chipped in with an unbeaten 10 off 15 to help India reach 168 for 6. Bangladesh’s bowlers, led by Rishad (2-27) and Tanzim Hasan Sakib (1-29), did well to restrict the scoring.
In the chase, Bangladesh leaned heavily on opener Saif Hassan, who fought hard for 69 off 51 balls despite three dropped catches—by Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, and Sanju Samson. He partnered with Parvez Hossain Emon (21 off 19) for 42 runs, but the rest crumbled against India’s spinners. Kuldeep Yadav shone with 3 for 18, Varun Chakravarthy grabbed 2 for 29, and Jasprit Bumrah bounced back strong with 2 for 18. Axar took 1 for 37, and Tilak Varma sealed the win by dismissing Mustafizur Rahman as Bangladesh folded for 127.
This marks India’s fifth straight win in the Asia Cup, locking in their final berth. Sri Lanka is out, so Bangladesh and Pakistan now face off in a do-or-die match for the other spot. Cricket fans can’t wait for the showdown!
