Afghanistan’s cricket team just got some tough news ahead of their Asia Cup 2025 matches. Star fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq is out of the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup due to a nagging shoulder injury. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) shared this update on X, explaining that their medical team hasn’t cleared him to play.

In their official statement, the ACB said: “Afghanistan’s veteran fast bowler, Naveen Ul Haq, has been ruled out of the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025. He is still recovering from a shoulder injury and has not been declared fit by the ACB medical team to participate in the remaining matches. Naveen will continue to undergo intensive treatment and rehabilitation until he is fully fit.”

This injury keeps piling on the bad luck for the 24-year-old pacer, who’s been a key part of Afghanistan’s T20 squad. He sat out their Asia Cup opener against Hong Kong and missed the recent tri-series prep games against Pakistan and UAE. Naveen’s last action on the field came in June, when he played for MI New York in the Major League Cricket (MLC).

To step in, the team has called up reserve fast bowler Abdullah Ahmadzai to the main squad. The 20-year-old made his international debut in the tri-series against UAE, grabbing one wicket in three overs during his only match so far. Though he’s still green, Ahmadzai packs serious pace and enthusiasm—Afghanistan hopes he rises to the occasion in the Asia Cup.

The ACB wrapped up their post by wishing Naveen a quick recovery and cheering on Ahmadzai for the games ahead.

Losing Naveen hurts big time for Afghanistan. With 41 T20Is under his belt, he’s known as a clutch performer, especially in the death overs. His cool-headed bowling has powered their attack in big moments over the years. Fans will be watching closely to see how the team bounces back without him in this crucial Asia Cup tournament.
