On Dec 13 in Bangkok, Thailand’s 1st Army Area Command announced on social media that, in cooperation with the Royal Thai Air Force, it had carried out air‑strikes at 16:09 local time on two Cambodian military targets. The strikes reportedly blew up the target’s weapons and ammunition depots as well as its air‑defence and communications systems.
Later that day, a Royal Thai Navy spokesperson said that naval forces had taken part in an operation in the early hours of the morning in the Gulf of Thailand. The mission aimed to blunt and contain Cambodian forces near Koh Kong Province and to safeguard the lives and property of residents along the Gulf coast.
In a press briefing about the Thailand‑Cambodia border situation, a spokesperson from the Thai Ministry of Defence and a health official—information brought to the press by Xinhua—reported that the latest round of clashes had left 15 Thai soldiers dead and more than 270 wounded.
At the start of the day, more than 260,000 Thai civilians had sought shelter in refugee camps, with seven civilians confirmed killed.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, speaking the same day, said he had separately spoken by phone with Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. He urged both sides to begin a ceasefire at 22:00 (15:00 GMT) on Saturday.
Anwar posted on social media that Malaysia was deeply concerned over the situation and called for an immediate halt to all hostilities, the use of force, and any movement of armed units.
To help deescalate tensions and improve transparency, Malaysia has requested the deployment of an ASEAN Observer Team, led by the Malaysian Chief of Defence Forces. The team will monitor the on‑ground situation and report its findings to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for December 16.
On his official social media page, Hun Manet said that Cambodia welcomed and supported the ceasefire proposal put forward by Anwar.
However, Anutin confirmed in a media interview that there would be no ceasefire on Saturday night. He stressed that Thailand must fully defend its sovereignty and the safety of its people and that it does not need to obey anyone else’s directives.
The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand has flared again since December 7, resulting in casualties on both sides.
