Rob Reiner’s son Nick charged with murder, held on $4M bail in slaughter of ‘Princess Bride’ director and wife Michele
Authorities said Monday that Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of the legendary filmmaker and his wife, Michele, at their Los Angeles home.
Nick Reiner, 32, who has publicly struggled for years with drug addiction, is being held on $4 million bail, Page Six confirmed. Police took him into custody Sunday night after discovering that the acclaimed director and his wife had been brutally killed inside their residence.
Sources said Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 68, were found dead in their Brentwood mansion after suffering multiple stab wounds. The couple’s daughter, Romy, reportedly discovered their bodies around 3:30 p.m. Sunday and told investigators she believed a family member “should be suspect,” according to TMZ.
Romy allegedly described the relative as “dangerous,” the outlet reported.
Nick Reiner has previously spoken openly about his long battle with addiction and periods of homelessness.
“I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas,” Nick told People in a 2016 interview.
He said his first trip to rehab came at just 15 years old and that he went through at least 17 treatment programs over the years.
“I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun,” he said.
Nick also admitted that he “could’ve died” after leaving a treatment center and ending up homeless at age 19.
“It’s all luck,” he said at the time. “You roll the dice, and you hope you make it.”
As a way to process his struggles, Nick said he co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie.” Rob Reiner directed the 2015 movie, which also starred “The Princess Bride” actor Cary Elwes.
Reflecting on his son’s addiction, Rob Reiner told the Los Angeles Times in 2016 that the experience had been emotionally devastating.
“It was very, very hard going through it the first time, with these painful and difficult highs and lows,” he said. “And then making the movie dredged it all up again.”
Nick, however, said his experiences ultimately shaped who he became.
“My addiction made me who I am now, having to deal with that stuff,” he told People. “I met crazy great people there, so out of my element. Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in LA and being around my family.”
Rob Reiner and his wife of 36 years, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday afternoon in their Brentwood home. The couple was reportedly killed with a knife following a heated argument, according to an initial report by TMZ.
