In Chengdu on Sunday, India made badminton history at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Championships 2025. Two young stars lifted the country’s medal tally to its highest ever – two golds, one silver and two bronze – as Shaina Manimuthu (U15) and Diksha Sudhakar (U17) each captured a singles title.

Shaina Manimuthu faced Japan’s Chiharu Tomita in the U15 girls’ singles final. She opened strong, taking the first game 21‑14, and kept her edge even as Tomita fought back in the second. At 22‑20, Shaina sealed the match on Saturday afternoon, completing the win in just 44 minutes.

In the U17 girls’ singles, Diksha Sudhakar gave India a landmark victory. She beat compatriot Lakshya Rajesh 21‑16, 21‑9 in a swift 27‑minute match, becoming the first Indian player to win a U17 title at this junior Asian event.

Together these victories give India its best campaign in the championships. The country will return home with two golds, one silver and two bronze medals. For context, India last achieved two gold medals in 2013, when Siril Verma won the U15 boys’ singles and the duo of Chirag Shetty and MR Arjun claimed the U17 boys’ doubles crown.

India’s other podium finishes came in boys’ singles and mixed doubles. Jagsher Singh Khanggura claimed bronze in the U17 boys’ singles after falling to China’s Hong Tian Yue in the semi‑finals. Meanwhile, the mixed‑doubles pair of Jangjeet Singh Kajla and Jananika Ramesh also earned a bronze, losing the semi‑final to I An Chang and Yo Han Wang from Chinese Taipei.

Indian medal winners so far

  • Gold – U17 girls’ singles: Diksha Sudhakar
  • Gold – U15 girls’ singles: Shaina Manimuthu
  • Silver – U17 girls’ singles: Lakshya Rajesh
  • Bronze – U17 boys’ singles: Jagsher Singh Khanggura
  • Bronze – U17 mixed doubles: Jangjeet Singh Kajla & Jananika Ramesh

India’s impressive haul underscores the country’s growing strength in badminton, especially among its next‑generation talent.
