In Kolkata, the West Bengal government gave former India women’s cricket star Richa Ghosh a new job as Deputy Superintendent in the state police. The ceremony ran from a colourful welcome at Eden Gardens, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee handed her the appointment letter.
While at the event, Ghosh also received the state’s Banga Bhushan award and a golden bat and ball from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). CAB added a cheque worth 34 lakhs rupees, a nod to the 34 runs she scored in the Women’s World Cup final. Former captain Sourav Ganguly, now BCCI president, was present and explained the prize’s significance.
Ganguly praised her performance: “When she came in at number six, the demands were high and the ball count low. She handled it brilliantly and made the difference.” He hinted she could soon captain India’s women’s team.
Ghosh talked about her game‑plan, saying she sets a target in each net session and loves taking on tough challenges to help her team win. The chief minister added that she hopes Ganguly will one day lead the International Cricket Council.
The event highlighted how cricket stars can transition into public service while celebrating their sporting legacy.
