Kolkata – In a ceremony at Eden Gardens, the West Bengal government gave team‑mate Richa Ghosh a new job in the police force. The former wicket‑keeper and batter—who helped India win the Women’s World Cup—was appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee handed the appointment letter in front of a cheering crowd. She also presented Ghosh with the state’s prestigious Banga Bhushan award and a golden bat and ball from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
CAB added a cash prize of ₹34 lakh, a nod to the 34 runs Richa scored in the final match of the World Cup. Former captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was also on hand. He congratulated her, saying that her bat‑six innings was the toughest in the game but that she handled it with skill and made the difference.
Ghosh was quick to share her game‑plan. “During net practice I set a target,” she said. “I love a challenge, and I always play to help the team win.”
Both Banerjee and Ganguly mentioned future hopes. The Chief Minister said she could see Ghosh leading the Indian women’s cricket team as a captain one day. Ganguly, meanwhile, hinted that he could be the next head of the International Cricket Council.
The event spotlighted Ghosh’s rise from the cricket field to a public service role, celebrating her achievements and hinting at a bright future in both cricket and community service.
