New Delhi, Oct 10 – Kings of the crease: Yashasvi Jaiswal struck 173 not out for India on the opening day of the final Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
India won the toss and chose to bat first. Jaiswal and KL Rahul built a swift start, taking the early wickets when Rahul was dismissed. Rahul’s partner, Sai Sudharsan, put on a fiery partnership, but Jaiswal edged ahead, smashing his seventh Test century. He has already converted his home centuries into double‑hundreds, and the 173* leaves him on the brink of a double‑ton in Tokyo.
Former India stars were quick to praise the young opener. Wasim Jaffer tweeted, “When he gets set the runs just flow. Another beautiful hundred, well played @ybj_19 keep going.” About Jaiswal’s form, Mohammad Kaif wrote, “Yashasvi Jaiswal keeps scoring hundreds in Test. His commitment to the game should be a lesson for all youngsters playing the game.” Irfan Pathan added, “Yet another big score from Yashasvi Jaiswal. This guy is the best left‑handed opener in Test cricket at the moment. Numbers suggest that.”
Jaiswal’s seven Test centuries come from diverse venues: his debut ton against the West Indies in Roseau, 2023; then scores at Vishakhapatnam, Rajkot and Perth in 2024. He netted two home centuries against England last year and an away ton against Australia in Sydney. This season he has made three centuries, including two at England’s Oval and Leeds, and his latest against the Windies in Delhi.
India’s storming start sets the tone for a decisive Test series. The match continues at 8:30 a.m. GMT on the second day at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. —
