BFI Cup 2025: Services, Haryana begin strong as inaugural season kicks off in Chennai

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) Cup 2025 kicked off with excitement on Wednesday at the Vellore Institute of Technology in Chennai. This week-long tournament, running from October 1 to 7, gives young Indian boxers a chance to shine and lets seasoned pros fine-tune their skills ahead of bigger fights.

Organized by the BFI, the event features elite men and women competing in 10 weight categories each, all following World Boxing standards. Top performers could earn big rewards—gold and silver medalists secure spots in the Elite National Camp, boosting their path to international success.

Early action in the women’s bouts set a thrilling pace. Haryana’s Mahi Siwach grabbed a close 3-2 win over Tamil Nadu’s Deepa S in the 48kg category. Lucky Singhmar from Haryana dominated Janet Philoveena J of Tamil Nadu with a second-round RSC stoppage in the 75kg division. Uttar Pradesh’s Rashi Sharma and All India Police’s Darshana pulled off tight victories in their groups, while Jharkhand’s Shena Kumari (57kg) and Railways’ Anjali (70kg) cruised to 5-0 shutouts.

Over in the men’s section, Services boxers made a strong start. Deepak edged out Haryana’s Vishesh 3-2 in the 55kg bout, Hussam Uddin blanked teammate Chirag 5-0 in a 60kg all-Services matchup, and Arman Ahlawat overpowered Punjab’s Arshpreet Singh Bhati 5-0 at 75kg. Haryana fired back with Pankaj Kumar’s 5-0 rout of SAI’s Vaibhav Dahiya in the 65kg class. Railways’ Sanjit Singh Keisham (50kg) and Mitesh Deswal (60kg), Uttar Pradesh’s Ratandeep Sharma (65kg), and Tamil Nadu’s S Vasanth Raj (70kg)—who scored a first-round RSC against Delhi’s Yash Solanki—also advanced with impressive wins.

The field packs serious talent. Boxers hail from state units and boards that hit the top eight at the Elite Nationals, plus SAI NCOE athletes and the host Tamil Nadu squad. You’ll also see stars from the last two Elite National Championships, Indian team members from the 2024 and 2025 Asian U-22 Championships, and medal winners from international meets since 2022. For extra depth, competitors include medalists from the Goa and Uttarakhand National Games, as well as the 6th Youth Nationals—all entering through official channels.

Boxing fans in Chennai and across India have plenty to watch as this inaugural BFI Cup 2025 heats up, spotlighting the next generation of Indian boxing talent.
