Tanvi Sharma brought home silver for India at the BWF World Junior Championships in Guwahati on Sunday. The top‑seeded Indian girl lost to Thailand’s second‑seeded Anyapat Phichitpreechasak, 15‑7, 15‑12, in a 28‑minute final.
This win makes Tanvi the fifth Indian and the third female shuttler to earn a silver medal at the Junior Worlds. It also keeps Olympic medallist Saina Nehwal as the only Indian to take gold, winning the title back in 2008. Other Indian medalists at the tournament include Aparna Popat (1996), Siril Verma (2015), Sankar Muthusamy (2022) and Saina Nehwal herself (silver in 2006).
The match began slowly for Tanvi. She struggled with Anyapat’s drop shots and made several unforced errors, falling behind 8‑5 by the break. “It was a cautious start,” Tanvi said after the game.
In the second game, Tanvi hung onto a brief three‑point lead after a burst of five straight points. The Thai player, who has a U15 Asian title, answered with three consecutive points to level the score at 8‑all. Unforced errors kept piling up, allowing Anyapat to regain control and close out the match.
Anyapat had already taken down Tanvi’s fellow Indian, Unnati Hooda, in the quarter‑finals. For Tanvi, the silver medal caps an impressive season. She also earned bronze at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships earlier this year and reached the final of the US Open.
Tanvi’s strong run shows how India’s next generation of badminton stars is stepping onto the world stage.
