Mohanlal, the superstar of Malayalam cinema, couldn’t hide his joy after learning he’s won the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023. The veteran actor called it a huge personal honor and a proud moment for the entire Malayalam film industry.
“I feel so grateful to the film family and audiences who’ve shaped me over the years,” Mohanlal said. “I’m accepting this with pure happiness. After 48 years in cinema, it’s a way to give back to everyone who’s supported me.”
He thanked the award jury and the Indian government for picking him. “This is a big win for me and Malayalam cinema,” he added. “I share it with all my fans and everyone on this journey. I see myself following in the footsteps of cinema’s great legends—it’s an honor to walk that path.”
Looking back on his career, Mohanlal got emotional. “Life brings amazing moments like this. I thank God and my parents. I’m also remembering the talented artists who’ve passed away and traveled this road with us.”
Mohanlal will head to New Delhi on September 23 to receive the award from India’s President. He’s only the second person from Kerala to earn this top Indian cinema honor, following legendary director Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who won in 2004.
Excitement poured in from Kerala leaders. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan hailed it as pride for Malayalam movies and the whole state. “Mohanlal’s incredible journey has inspired generations—it’s well-deserved,” Vijayan said.
Culture Minister Saji Cherian congratulated him too, calling the award a spotlight on Kerala’s world-class talent in Indian cinema. He praised Mohanlal’s roles as actor, producer, and singer that have boosted the industry.
Assembly Speaker A.N. Shamseer noted how Mohanlal’s dedication shines in every role. “His natural style has captivated Malayalis and global fans for over 45 years, motivating countless artists and viewers.”
Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan echoed the praise: “Mohanlal has earned Indian cinema’s highest award with his unique charm. He’s mesmerized audiences worldwide for decades and inspired generations. Congrats to our beloved Lalettan—it’s a win for every Malayali.”
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the news Saturday on its official X account. “On the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Committee’s recommendation, the Government of India is thrilled to confer the 2023 award on Shri Mohanlal,” it stated.
