“Cannot accept trophy from a person who represents a country that is waging war against our country’: BCCI secretary

India’s cricket team made a bold statement after their thrilling win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup match in Dubai. They refused to accept the trophy and medals from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairperson Mohsin Naqvi, citing his role as a top leader in Pakistan—a nation India sees as waging war against it. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia called the move “unsportsmanlike” and vowed a strong protest at the upcoming ICC conference in November.

During the post-match ceremony, things got tense. Pakistan’s players picked up their runners-up medals, and stars like Tilak Varma (Player of the Match) and Abhishek Sharma (Player of the Tournament) grabbed theirs too. But when it was Team India’s turn, presenter Simon Doull announced they wouldn’t collect anything. “The Indian cricket team will not be collecting their awards tonight,” he said on live TV, wrapping up the event quickly.

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav and the rest of Team India didn’t let it dampen their spirits. They celebrated their victory with big smiles for the cameras, even mimicking Rohit Sharma’s famous slow-walk from the T20 World Cup 2024 win, as fireworks lit up the sky.

Speaking from Mumbai, Saikia explained the decision. “We can’t accept a trophy from someone who represents a country fighting against ours,” he told . Naqvi doubles as Pakistan’s Interior Minister and PCB chairperson, which fueled the controversy. Saikia slammed Naqvi for reportedly taking the Asia Cup 2025 trophy and medals away, calling it shocking. “That’s not right—these belong to India. We hope he returns them soon and shows some good sense.” He stressed they’ll raise a serious complaint about Naqvi’s behavior at the ICC meeting in Dubai.

On the field, India dominated Pakistan. They won the toss, chose to bowl first, and restricted Pakistan to 146 all out in 19.1 overs. Openers Sahidzada Farhan (57 off 38) and Fakhar Zaman (46 off 35) gave Pakistan a solid 84-run start, but India’s spinners turned the game. Kuldeep Yadav took 4 for 30, Varun Chakravarthy grabbed 2 for 30, and Jasprit Bumrah finished with 2 for 25 to seal the innings.

Chasing 147, India stumbled early at 20 for 3 after Faheem Ashraf’s burst of 3 for 29. But Tilak Varma steadied the ship with an unbeaten 69 off 53 balls, including three fours and four sixes. He partnered with Sanju Samson (24 off 21) for 57 runs, then Shivam Dube (33 off 22) added firepower. Rookie Rinku Singh, in his first Asia Cup game, hit the winning runs on the first ball of the final over, sparking wild celebrations for Team India’s victory.
