Berlin, Nov 4 – Borussia Dortmund’s young midfielder Jobe Bellingham is ready to head back to the United Kingdom for Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Manchester City, after a period of tension at the club has eased up. The 20‑year‑old, whose brother Jude plays for Real Madrid and the England national team, has regained confidence following a rough start after his move from Sunderland.
In early November, rumors of a possible early exit for Jobe circulated, but the club’s top figures – sporting director Sebastian Kehl, CEO Lars Ricken, and head coach Niko Kovac – stepped in for private talks. Their goal was to show the player that the club still believes in him and to help him manage the pressure of living up to his brother’s name.
Coach Kovac told Jobe not to worry too much about “the expectations” and reassured him that he was on a steady, positive path. “I have no concerns – I know his abilities. We’re building him up slowly, and things are progressing faster than I expected,” Kovac said.
The support has paid off on the pitch. Jobe has featured in 14 matches for Dortmund, including 2 assists, and has had promising performances in key Champions League and Bundesliga games. “He’s reached a competitive level and is ready to challenge our more experienced midfield teammates,” Kovac added.
The unrest was stoked a few weeks earlier when Jobe’s father, Mark Bellingham (49), stormed into the team locker room to protest a substitution. Dortmund’s hierarchy has since declared that the locker room is a no‑entry zone for outsiders, stressing that such actions are unacceptable.
Jude Bellingham’s own success at Dortmund and his subsequent move to Real Madrid – along with his role in England’s 2023 World Cup squad – has always cast a long shadow. Dortmund’s leadership is keen to leave Jobe’s development in his own hands and says comparisons to his brother are unhelpful.
Whether Jobe will start against Manchester City remains to be seen, but the club’s calm, united front has given him the chance to contribute on the field. The match on Wednesday will test whether his renewed confidence and growing experience translate into more minutes for the young midfielder.
