Indian Squash Stars Shine at Otters Club: Veer Chotrani and Tanvi Khanna Reach Finals in Mumbai
Mumbai’s Otters Club turned into a battleground for top squash talent on Thursday, as India’s Veer Chotrani and Tanvi Khanna powered their way into the finals of the Squash Indian Tour 2. This PSA Challenger event has been buzzing with excitement, and these two stars stole the show with their impressive performances.
Veer Chotrani, the top seed in the men’s draw, lived up to his billing as the favorite. He dominated Hong Kong’s Ming Hong Tang with a swift 11-3, 11-6, 11-6 victory that lasted just 23 minutes. Chotrani controlled every rally with his sharp shots and lightning-fast movement, never giving his opponent a chance to breathe. Now, he’s set for a thrilling title clash against fifth seed Chi Him Wong from Hong Kong, who’s been on fire throughout the tournament.
Over in the women’s section, sixth seed Tanvi Khanna pulled off a dramatic semifinal win to book her spot in the final. She faced her fellow Indian and second seed Akanksha Salunkhe, who grabbed the first game 11-7 and led 5-4 in the second. But Akanksha had to retire unexpectedly, handing Tanvi the victory. This marks Tanvi’s second straight final after she came runner-up in the Jaipur leg of the HCL Squash Indian Tour last month. Next up, she’ll battle Egyptian top seed Amina El Rihany for the women’s crown.
Both players built their momentum from strong quarterfinal wins on Wednesday. Chotrani faced a tough start against Egypt’s Seif Shenawy, dropping the first game 9-11. But he roared back to win 11-4, 11-9, 11-3 in 36 minutes, carrying that fire into his semifinal rout.
In the women’s quarters, Akanksha made quick work of Egypt’s eighth seed Lojayn Gohary, sweeping her 11-5, 11-5, 12-10 in 29 minutes. Tanvi, meanwhile, outfought France’s third seed Enora Villard 11-4, 11-9, 11-9 in 27 minutes, setting up that intense all-Indian semifinal.
Not everything went India’s way, though. Seventh seed Suraj Kumar Chand put up a valiant fight in the men’s semis but fell short in a five-game thriller against Hong Kong’s Shing Fung Lam. Chand led twice, but Lam edged him out 11-6, 5-11, 11-3, 6-11, 11-6 in a grueling 51 minutes.
Fans are already hyped for the finals—could this be India’s day at the Squash Indian Tour 2? Stay tuned for more updates from Mumbai’s squash scene!
