Hyderabad’s rising cricket star Tilak Varma made headlines again on Tuesday when he met Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The 22-year-old batsman, fresh off his match-winning heroics in India’s thrilling Asia Cup final victory over Pakistan, received warm praise from the CM.
Revanth Reddy honored Varma for his standout performance in the Dubai showdown on Sunday. Varma, who stepped up when India lost three early wickets, smashed an unbeaten 69 with four sixes and three boundaries. His cool-headed knock earned him the Man of the Match award and sealed a memorable win for the team.
In a sweet gesture, Varma gifted the Chief Minister a signed cricket bat during their meeting. The young player, son of an electrician from Hyderabad, has quickly become a fan favorite.
Fans gave Varma a hero’s welcome at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Monday night. Overjoyed, he shared on Instagram: “Overwhelmed by the love and support from Hyderabad today. Truly grateful to every Indian for standing by me. Jai Hind.”
On Tuesday, Varma returned to his roots, visiting the Legal Cricket Academy in Lingampalli where he honed his skills. Joined by his childhood coach and mentor Salam Bayash, he chatted with young aspiring cricketers on the field. A big crowd turned out, waving the national flag as they cheered their local hero.
Speaking to reporters, Varma opened up about his journey. He credited his coach deeply, saying he respects Salam just like legends Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli do their mentors. “I’ll always be indebted to him,” Varma added.
Reflecting on his Asia Cup innings, the Hyderabadi sensation called it even better than his two domestic centuries. Facing intense pressure from Pakistan after those early setbacks, Varma focused on staying calm. “We had lost three wickets, and I knew if I panicked, I’d let down not just myself but the whole country,” he explained.
Even as Pakistani players trash-talked, Varma kept his cool and let his bat speak. “We were just playing a sport,” he said. “If emotions take over, you can’t perform.”
Varma’s story inspires many in Hyderabad and across India, showing how talent and grit can light up the cricket world.
