Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria has slammed the national team for their poor showing in the Asia Cup match against India, calling out the players and management for dodging blame. Instead of owning up to their mistakes, he says they’re quick to point fingers at others.
This comes right after India crushed Pakistan in a tense group stage clash. To add fuel to the fire, Team India skipped the traditional post-match handshake with the Pakistan players, sparking plenty of debate.
“Pakistan cricket is in a really bad spot these days,” Kaneria told . “Whenever something goes wrong—like this handshake snub—they blame everyone else instead of fixing their own issues.” He put the heat on Pakistan’s cricket bosses, saying, “The selectors answer to 220 million people. What kind of team did you pick? Who did you hire as coaches? Where’s the game plan and strategy?”
Kaneria made it clear the gap between the two teams is obvious. “Pakistan isn’t performing like we hoped, but India is playing at a world-class level,” he said. “From that last match, it’s plain to see Pakistan isn’t matching up to India right now.”
The drama didn’t stop there. A day later, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi—who also leads the Asian Cricket Council—called for match referee Andy Pycroft to be kicked out of the Asia Cup. Naqvi claimed Pycroft told the captains not to shake hands during the toss, breaking with custom.
Kaneria weighed in on the handshake controversy too, saying it created unnecessary chaos after the India-Pakistan showdown. “If Pakistan keeps getting caught up in this stuff and ignores the actual cricket, they’re just heading downhill,” he warned. He pushed for better planning, solid strategies, and real accountability from the top to help the team compete globally.
With the Asia Cup heating up, Pakistan’s cricket team is under intense pressure both on the field and off it. All eyes are on how the players and coaches bounce back from the criticism, especially with a crucial Super 4s rematch against India set for Sunday.
