SAIL steel drives railway connectivity in northeast with Bairabi-Sairang project

India’s steel giant, Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), has stepped up big time for a key railway project in Mizoram. The government-owned company supplied a whopping 15,000 metric tons of top-notch steel products for the 51-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line. This move highlights SAIL’s role in boosting India’s infrastructure growth.

From its flagship Bhilai Steel Plant, SAIL delivered around 10,000 metric tons of high-grade R-260 Prime rails. On top of that, it provided about 5,000 metric tons of other vital steel items like plates, TMT bars, and structural steel. These came from plants in Bokaro, Rourkela, Bhilai, Durgapur, and Burnpur, as per SAIL’s latest statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the Bairabi-Sairang project on September 13, showing India’s push to connect every corner of the country better. SAIL calls this supply a clear sign of its commitment to nation-building, offering strong and reliable steel for major projects.

SAIL keeps supporting the Northeast’s development through steel for railways, power plants, hydroelectric projects, and border links. This railway effort adds to its impressive track record, which includes the Chenab Railway Bridge, Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal Broad Gauge line, Atal Tunnel, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and bridges like Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel.

Beyond infrastructure, SAIL is powering India’s defence too. Last month, it supplied nearly 8,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for two advanced warships, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, now part of the Indian Navy. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned these frigates in Visakhapatnam.

SAIL teamed up with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) to provide hot-rolled sheets and plates from its Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela plants. This partnership strengthens India’s naval capabilities with homegrown steel expertise.
